IPCC Global Stocktake, 2023

The IPCC, the UN-appointed scientific council on climate, is of course the first resource to go to to understand emissions. This global stocktake, 8 years after the Paris agreement, is a good reminder of where we are, and the remaining gap to cover to get on a 2 degrees, or 1.5 degrees, trajectory. Very simply put, we are not on track and even the NDCs barely get us to 2 degrees. This is very clear in the specific figure highlighted on the left, but the whole report is worth a read.

The New York Times, October 2021

This New York Times infographic dates back from 2021 and could use an update. But it is still my ‘hope chart’. It helps me keep hopes up as it reminds us that, while we are clearly not on track, we have made some progress. The trajectory we are on now is better than the one we were on before the . It would still come with very dire consequences for human life on the planet. But the progress and investments, particularly in electricity generation and electrifying transportation, are making a difference. So we now have to continue down that path, push investment in key technologies in other sectors, and a lot more.
